Which TikTok aspect ratio should I use?
Use 9:16 vertical when you can. It fills the phone screen, which is how most people watch.
9:16 is TikTok's ad-guidance recommendation, not an upload rule. Square and landscape videos are not refused for their shape alone. Width and height are checked against pixel limits instead.
Read a ratio as width:height. Portrait is taller than it is wide; square has equal sides.

Crop removes edges; fit keeps the whole picture but makes it smaller. Reposition the crop in your editor if the subject is off-center. This tool does not inspect or resize a file.
How to change the shape without stretching
A close-up usually survives a crop. A screen recording usually needs every edge, so fit it with padding. Keep the proportions intact either way.
Choose the canvas
Set the output shape in your editor. The examples above are illustrative editing canvases, not required pixel presets. A shape alone does not determine whether a file can be uploaded.
Crop to fill, or fit the whole picture
For a crop, enlarge the clip proportionally until it fills the canvas, then reposition the subject. For a fit, scale it down until all edges are visible and add a background to the unused area. Do not adjust width and height independently: that stretches the picture.
Review movement and text
Play the whole clip. Check that a moving speaker stays inside the crop and that labels or captions remain readable at phone size. A centered calculation cannot tell where your subject is.

TikTok video size
Postdom checks TikTok uploads at 360–4,096 px wide and 360–4,096 px high. TikTok's ad guidance recommends 720p or higher.
A bigger canvas does not sharpen a blurry source. Start from the clearest footage you have.

The 10 minutes (600 seconds) ceiling is a Postdom check, not a promise that your account can publish that length. The transfer guide describes its long-video allowance for the initialize Upload Video endpoint, not a universal Direct Post limit. Check the selected account and posting method before exporting.
If a declaration is rejected, fix the width, height, duration, format or file size in the export. Renaming a file does not change its format. Passing the dimensions-only checker does not check file contents or authorize publication.
Questions about the TikTok aspect ratio
Does a TikTok video have to be vertical?
No. 9:16 is a recommendation, and Postdom does not refuse a square or landscape video for its shape. Pixel size, length and your account's limits still apply.
Is aspect ratio the same as resolution?
No. Aspect ratio is width compared with height. Resolution is the actual pixel count. A square stays square at any pixel size.
How long can a TikTok video be?

Will changing the aspect ratio make my video sharper?
